The Importance of Dental Exams
Why are dental exams and cleanings essential?
Dental exams and cleanings are necessary. For the dental exam, we need to take a look at your teeth. We're going to take x-rays and make sure that you don't have any cavities or abnormal lesions, so that we can treat them before they get worse. The cleaning is essential to ensure your gums stay healthy and that you don't have any bacteria sitting in your gum tissue.
What is included in a dental exam?
A dental exam often includes x-rays, which we take every 6 months to a year, depending on how many cavities you usually have. It also includes a dental exam where I'll look at your teeth, and the hygienist will examine your gums and check the perio charting.
What is the dentist looking for in a dental exam?
We look for any abnormal tissue, inflammation of your gums, recession of your gums, cavities, or any staining that you have.
What kind of recommendation might come from a dentist during a dental exam?
We might recommend a filling if you have a cavity. Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge, implant, or partial denture may be suggested, depending on how many teeth are missing. Sometimes, we recommend pulling a tooth if it is not restorable. A type of cleaning might be recommended as well. If there's an abnormal lesion that could be cancerous, we might refer you to a specialist, like an oral surgeon, for evaluation. We might also recommend whitening or clear aligners.
How long does a full dental exam take?
It depends on your scenario and how many things are going on. Usually, if we need to take x-rays and do the exam, it takes around 20 to 30 minutes. It can vary from 10 to 15 minutes as well, depending on your conditions.
Are dental exams painful?
Dental exams are not painful. Sometimes the x-rays might be a little uncomfortable for some patients because the sensor is a bit large. We try to use the smallest one that fits your mouth. The perio charting, where we call out some numbers, can be a little uncomfortable, but nothing will be painful. If you find anything painful, let us know, and we'll ensure you're more comfortable.
