Dental Scanner at Seminole Premier Dental
Hi, I'm Dr. Mertens here at Seminole Premier Dental. We receive many questions about digital scanners. Today, I'm going to answer some of the most common questions on this topic to provide you with a better understanding.
What is a 3D dental scanner?
It's a small handheld device that takes thousands of pictures of teeth and gums, creating a detailed digital 3D model of your mouth.
Is it safe to use?
Yes, it uses light like a camera, not X-rays, so there's no radiation exposure. The scanner usually doesn't hurt at all. It passes over your teeth similar to a camera and is more comfortable than a traditional dental impression.
How long does it take to do a scan?
Usually, it only takes a few minutes for us to perform a dental scan.
Why do I need a 3D scan?
A 3D scan helps achieve a precise real-time view of your teeth, gums, and bite. We use it for crowns, clear liners, implants, bridges, dentures, and partials. It also helps you understand your treatment plan and allows you to see your own teeth closely.
Is it better than traditional dental impressions?
Yes, a digital scan is cleaner, faster, and more accurate. It is more comfortable for the patient and does not cause gagging as traditional impressions might.
Can I see the result right away?
Yes, whenever we scan, as you can see in the video, the scan appears immediately on the screen. This way, you can take a look at it right away too.
What happens after we take the scan?
The digital scan model is directly sent to the lab or software, depending on the purpose of the scan. For example, if we perform a crown prep, we will take a scan instead of a traditional impression, and it is sent to the lab directly, where they will process the crown.
Do I need anything to prepare for a scan?
No special preparation is needed. Just call for an appointment, and we'll perform a scan for you.
