Why are healthy gums important?

Healthy gums are very important for all of us. If the gums are not healthy, it can mean there are bacteria present. Gum disease has been associated with serious health conditions such as stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease.

How can you tell if your gums are healthy or unhealthy?

You can tell if your gums are healthy or unhealthy by coming to the dental hygienist. We evaluate the gums every time patients come in for a cleaning. We check the gums with a probe to assess their condition. If the gums measure 1 to 3 mm, that generally means you have healthy gums. If the gums measure 4 mm but there is no bleeding or inflammation, that may still be manageable. If the gums measure 4 mm and there is bleeding and inflammation, that can be a sign of gingivitis.

If the gums measure 5 mm or more, that may indicate periodontal disease and possible bone loss. Periodontal disease is very serious because it can lead to bone loss and tooth loss.

Why are my gums bleeding?

I have a lot of patients who come to the dental chair and ask me, "Why are my gums bleeding?" One reason gums may bleed is that proper home care is not being followed. It is very important to brush your teeth twice a day with an electric toothbrush for 2 minutes each time. It is also very important to floss your teeth every night before you go to bed. Using a Waterpik can help as well.

Can gum disease be reversed or treated?

First of all, if it's in the first stage of gum disease, which is gingivitis, the gums can return to a healthy condition. If it is left untreated, the disease can progress to a different stage called periodontal disease. The gums might look healthier, may not appear inflamed, and may not bleed as much, but bone loss may already have occurred.

What do healthy gums look like?

It's very important for patients to come in every 6 months for a cleaning so the gums can stay healthier. Healthy gums should be light pink and firm. They generally should not bleed or feel sensitive. If there is bleeding when the patient flosses, that means something may be going on. Bacteria may have gotten under the gums. This can be addressed by coming to the dental office and having the gums evaluated by the dental hygienist and the dentist.

What is the best way to take care of your gums at home?

The best way to take care of your gums at home is by brushing your teeth twice a day, morning and night, with an electric toothbrush, flossing every single day, preferably at night, and using a Waterpik daily.

When is gum grafting necessary?

Gum grafting may be necessary if the patient has a lot of gum recession and the roots are exposed.
