Understanding Dental Hygiene and Why It's So Important
What is considered proper dental hygiene for an adult, and what could happen if I don't maintain it?
Proper dental hygiene involves brushing twice a day with an electric toothbrush for 2 minutes each time, daily flossing, using a water pick, and using any toothpaste that contains fluoride. If the patient doesn't practice good dental hygiene, we might see bleeding, inflammation, tenderness, and swollen gums.
What will the dental hygienist do when I'm at the dentist's office?
The main duties of a dental hygienist include cleaning the patient's teeth and educating patients about their dental hygiene and overall health. During a dental cleaning, the hygienist will start by probing the patient's gums to assess their condition. If the gums are inflamed and measure 4 mm, it indicates the gingivitis stage. If the gums measure 5 mm or more, the patient has started to lose bone, which is a different stage called periodontitis, which is more serious.
We clean all the deposits in the patient's mouth that have been there for a long time and educate patients on the correct way to brush and floss at home. We demonstrate the electric toothbrush and water pick so the patient has all the information they need to take care of themselves.
In some cases, patients might feel sensitivity. We always ask the patients how they feel and have different gels available that can numb the patient so they feel more comfortable, allowing us to do a better job.
How long will a dental cleaning take at Seminole Premier Dental?
Dental cleaning usually takes half an hour to 45 minutes. Deep cleaning is very important because bacteria have gotten under the gums and are causing bone loss. If left untreated, the disease will advance to a different stage of periodontitis. Deep cleaning prevents teeth from being lost.
How can I maintain proper dental hygiene?
Patients need to follow the instructions given by the hygienist during the cleaning procedure, such as brushing twice a day with an electric toothbrush for 2 minutes each time, flossing daily, using a water pick, and using any toothpaste that contains fluoride.
