What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a mild stage of gum disease that causes inflamed, tender, swollen, and bleeding gums. Periodontitis is more serious and more advanced. During gingivitis, patients still have a good amount of bone. During periodontitis, patients have lost bone. Gingivitis is reversible, while periodontitis is irreversible.
What are the first symptoms of gingivitis?
The first symptoms a patient experiences during the gingivitis stage are bleeding, swollen, inflamed, tender gums, and recession.
Is gingivitis dangerous?
Gingivitis is not actually dangerous, but it can become dangerous if left untreated.
How is gingivitis treated?
Gingivitis is treated by removing the plaque above the gum line and educating patients about flossing and brushing techniques. In some severe cases, we might prescribe antibacterial rinses. We also recommend patients use a warm salt water rinse at home to soothe irritated gums. Healing usually takes about two to four weeks for moderate gingivitis.
Can gingivitis be reversed?
Gingivitis is reversible, but diligent home care is essential for patients to maintain healthy gums.
